Gérard Depardieu stars as the eponymous police detective in this crime drama co-written and directed by Patrice Leconte. In 1950s Paris, a girl is found dead, wearing an expensive rented gown. Maigret, recently advised by his doctor to take a break or consider retirement, begins to investigate, seeking to identify her and to find her killer.
He soon learns that she came to Paris hoping for a better life, but lost her innocence and her dreams before ultimately losing her life. The cast also includes Jade Labeste, Aurore Clément, Mélanie Bernier, Anne Loiret and Pierre Moure.
