Hayao Miyazaki writes and directs this Japanese anime featuring the voice talents of Luca Padovan, Robert Pattinson and Florence Pugh. Mahito Maki (voice of Padovan) lives with his father Shoichi (Christian Bale) and his pregnant wife Natsuko (Gemma Chan), the sister of Mahito's late mother Hisako (also Chan) who perished in a hospital fire. Feeling lost after the death of his mother, Mahito struggles to fit in at school and resents his family, but when he encounters a mischievous heron (Pattinson) who lures Mahito into believing he can be reunited with his mother, he follows the heron into an ethereal world where the dead live amongst magical creatures and humans with incredible powers.
