Film Chest presents Colonel March of Scotland Yard, the complete 26-episode series from the early 1950's starring Boris Karloff in his outstanding portrayal of March, an unconventional criminal investigator that cracks difficult cases bordering on the x-files. Includes original trailer, episode synopses, photo gallery, and trivia. The “locked-room” genre of murder mystery introduces the hypothesis of an impossible crime – a crime that defies explanation of a criminal entering a crime scene, committing a crime, and then leaving unnoticed. The deductive reasoning behind the solving of such crimes is generally reserved for those of the highest intelligence and exemplified well by the likes of Sherlock Holmes and the more contemporary Lt. Columbo. Writer John Dickson Carr (aka Carter Dickson) was an expert in this “impossible crimes” category and wrote a series of mystery stories around a master criminologist named Colonel March, who was enlisted by British Intelligence to investigate unusual cases concerning the locked-room-murder-mystery-whodunnits...and the supernatural. Enter Boris Karloff as the one-eyed Colonel March, who alone runs Scotland Yard’s “Department of Queer Complaints,” a term referencing extreme cases, considered unsolvable by the standard fare of British Intelligence. Karloff’s Colonel March is a brilliant, slightly egoistical eccentric, an acknowledged genius who works on his own with no supervisor, and with whom the toughest, most bizarre cases land. March’s insight to solve the unsolvable is revealed in cases such as a man murdered by a disembodied pair of gloves and a séance that seems to have conjured a real spirit. You will bear witness to an investigation of a rare art piece called, “The Second Mona Lisa,” that was supposedly painted six months after the first, and then, be immersed in an encounter with the Abominable Snowman, among many more. Supported by Ewan Roberts as Inspector Ames along with an extensive cast of characters, Karloff's Colonel March stands the test of time with a performance that only Karloff can deliver. The Colonel March TV series premiered first in the United States from December 1954 to Spring of 1955. Based initially on three pilot films produced in 1952, an additional 23 episodes were developed in 1953 creating the full 26-episode series.
