American Western set in Montana, starring Jane Fonda, James Caan, Jason Robards and Richard Farnsworth. Cattle rancher Ella Connors (Fonda) comes under increasing pressure from local land baron J.W. Ewing (Robards) to sell her land to him.
Under increasing financial difficulty Ella struggles on with the help of veteran cowhand Dodger (Farnsworth) and also WWII soldier Frank Athearn (Caan) who agrees to purchase a small piece of her land to alleviate some of Ella's financial worries. However, Ewing is determined to have the land for himself and stops at nothing to break the hard-working ranchers who do all they can to pay off their debts and continue their way of life.
