Battle Kaiju Series 03 – Ultraman vs. Gomora Introduced in Episodes 26 and 27 of the original ULTRAMAN series from 1966, the “Ancient Monster” Gomora has the distinction of starring in the first two-part story in the franchise and being the first kaiju to defeat an Ultraman in one-on-one combat.
Gomora was designed by Tohru “Tohl” Narita, Tsuburaya Productions’ lead concept artist on the early Ultra shows, with the suit sculpted and built by Ryosaku Takayama, maker of such popular monsters as Red King and Garamon. Their Gomora creates an impression of great strength with its thick neck, large hands, massive arms and legs, and a long whiplike tail. Perhaps its most iconic feature is a pair of huge, curved horns that were inspired by the water buffalo-style helmets worn by Kuroda Nagamasa, a feudal lord from Japan’s Warring States period.
