Chente, owner of a prosperous cake shop with his wife Dolores, kicks his drunk and lazy son Vicente out of the house. His other children, Lupe and Ricardo, return from studying in the US, Americanized, full of pride, and ashamed of their parents who sacrificed so much for them. The poor kids' expenses force Chente to mortgage his cake shop to the loan shark Ponciano. Lupe and Ricardo are going to marry the brothers Eduardo and Poli, supposed sons of millionaires in Switzerland who intend to save their family from ruin with Don Chente's money. As the fake rich serve Chente's cakes and Dolores, at a pop-of-the-pot tea party, Lupe and Ricardo pretend not to know their parents. Poor María, pregnant and scorned by Ricardo, must become the exotic Narda, "the atomic dancer," to support herself. Thanks to nanny Jacinta, Vicente is forgiven in his small room by Chente, who goes to see him with Dolores. By chance, María overhears Eduardo talking about his true plans and tells them to the ailing Vicente, her still-in-love first boyfriend, whom she didn't marry because of Ricardo. Vicente interrupts Eduardo and Lupe's wedding and prevents it by telling the truth. Vicente dies. Ricardo and María marry, and Chente, with his family, now reunited again, runs a new and flourishing cake stand.
